On September 6, 2017, at approximately 7:23 P.M.., Salinas Police officers responded to the 100 block of Orchard Ave for a report of a person bleeding from the head. Upon arrival, they found Francisco Aguilar, age 37, suffering from blunt force trauma to his head. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. Over the course of the following weeks, Salinas Detectives developed information that Jose Asuncion Gonzalez-Aguilar (42) was responsible for the murder and a $1,000,000 arrest warrant for Homicide was issued. Gonzalez-Aguilar was believed to have fled the Salinas area, but his whereabouts were unknown.
In the late evening hours of Saturday, 12/23/17, Deputies with the Merced County Sheriff's Department responded to a potential illegal burn in an unincorporated area of Merced County. Deputies contacted a subject and, upon checking him for warrants, discovered Gonzalez-Aguilar's homicide warrant and placed him under arrest without incident. They made contact with the Salinas Police Department and Detectives drove to Merced County to transport Gonzalez-Aguilar back to Salinas where he was questioned prior to being booked on the homicide warrant and an unrelated DUI warrant.
