The Salinas Police Department would like to announce the retirement of Commander Henry Gomez. His final briefing will be Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. in the Salinas Armory Hall, located at 100 Howard St., across the street from the Police Department.
A native of San Jose, California, Commander Henry Gomez graduated from Silver Creek High School in 1983. He attended Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo for a couple of years, studying architecture, before finding his true calling in public service.Henry was hired as a police recruit by the City of Salinas on August 29, 1988.He graduated from the Gavilan College Police Academy, Class #79, on December 16,1988.
As an officer, Henry worked various assignments, including Patrol, Crime Scene Investigations, Community Policing in a 20-block area of Salinas, Field Training, and School Resource Officer. He also worked as an acting Corporal.During his thirteen years as an officer, he received several letters of commendation for his work in the field.
Henry returned to school and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix in 2003.
He was assigned as a detective from 2002 until 2006, where he investigated a wide range of cases, including fraud, robberies, missing persons, child abuse, sexual assaults, and homicides.
In 2006, Henry was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He worked Patrol and supervised the Department's Field Training Program.He also supervised the Hostage Negotiation Team.In 2007, Henry and three of his officers were recipients of the National Association of Police Officers' Honorable Mention for the 'Top Cop” award. This was for their arrest of a sword-wielding mentally ill person without having to resort to lethal force.In 2010, Henry was selected to supervise the Investigations Division, a position he held for two years.
In 2012, Henry graduated from the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute. It is an intense program designed to stimulate personal growth, leadership, and ethical decision-making in California law enforcement front-line supervisors.At the same time, he also earned his Master's Degree in Criminal Justice through the University of Cincinnati.
Henry was promoted to Commander in 2012 and assigned to the Patrol Division. He was the commander in the Department's Mobile Field Force.Henry also represented the Department in the city's efforts to improve governing with more racial equity.From 2015 to 2017, Henry was the Administration Commander for the Department.In that position, he supervised Personnel and Training, Special Operations, Community Relations, and the School Resource Officer program.In his final year with the Department, Henry has been back on Patrol, supervising swing shift.
