Salinas Police Officers responded to the 1500 block of Mazatlán on the report of a male acting erratically and refusing to leave the residence. The officers met with the suspects mother, who indicated that she wanted him to leave as he had been damaging property and was possibly under the influence or having a psychotic episode.
They contacted Michael Dorado (48) in a bedroom and found that he was noncommunicative with officers who were also crisis-trained by Monterey County Behavioral Health. As they continued to try to speak with him, he threw an object at one of the officers and lunged for both of them. They fired their Tasers at Dorado who was able to fight through the effects and refused to comply with officers' orders. He fought his way past them and onto the roof via a window.
Several more officers responded to the location. Officers spent the next several hours negotiating with Dorado who continued to be noncompliant and didn't want to communicate with hostage negotiation-trained officers. Instead, Dorado began breaking windows and tearing roof tiles up and throwing the items into the driveway and surrounding areas near where the officers were located. As he threw one such tile off of the roof, he lost his balance and rolled off the roof. He was then apprehended by a police canine and taken into custody before being transported to the hospital for treatment.
The entire incident lasted approximately 2.5 hours. Dorado will be taken to the Monterey County Jail for a variety of felony and misdemeanor charges after he is discharged from the hospital.
