The last day for joining the 2014 Salinas Police Activities League Junior Giants saw signups surge past 700.
That number represents dramatic growth in the youth baseball league. Two years ago, signups totaled just under 300, while in 2013 there were more than 500, according to PAL executive director Officer Angel Gomez.
"I'm extremely excited that we're able to provide this program for these kids," said Officer Gomez, who is also the commissioner of the PAL baseball league. "It not only gives the kids the ability to play ball during the summer time, it strengthens the connection between police officers and the community."
Signups began May 10 and were held Saturdays through today. The league will try to accommodate players who apply even after today, depending on the availability of coaches, according to Officer Gonzalez. Those interested can reach him at (831) 970-7874.
Opening Day for the Junior Giants is June 28 at El Dorado Park, 1655 El Dorado Drive, near Harden Parkway. Games will be played all day.
