Yesterday, officers took a vandalism report of tagging to the south wall of the 7-11 at s. Main and Maple. The incident occurred at 0240 hrs and was captured on video. The owner of 7-11 called KSBW and they agreed to run the story. The video and still images were shown on last night's news broadcast. As a result, the investigating officer received a tip from the public with the name of the suspect. He was identified as Matthew Sanchez (19). While the officer was working on the case, Sanchez came to the police department to turn himself in. Sanchez said he saw himself on TV yesterday and knew he was wanted. Sanchez is on probation for a similar offense. He was cited and the case has been referred to the Monterey County District Attorney's Office for prosecution. This is a great example of how the media and the community can work together with the police department to solve crimes.
