Officers were dispatched to a man with a gun call after a citizen saw a white male adult holding a rifle or shotgun in the area. He was said to be alone and not engaged in any type of disturbancve. Two Salinas Police detectives arrived and walked to the corner of Buckhorn Dr. and Chamise Dr. when they heard a male voice yell, "freeze!". The two detectives took cover and gained access to a home in order to scan the area from the second floor but nothing was seen. About 20 minutes later, an officer heard a shotgun blast nearby but nothing was seen. Eventually, a backpack containing live shotgun rounds and an empty rifle case was located at the corner of Buckhorn Dr. and Saguaro Dr. Officers worked in teams of 4 to conduct yard-to-yard searches and a CHP helicopter responded from San Luis Obispo to assist. Overall, units were on scene for 2 1/2 hours but the suspect was never located. The suspect was described as a white male adult, 20-30 years of age, short dark hair, medium build and medium height wearing a white t-shirt and blue or black pants.
Salinas Police are asking anyone with information about this incident to call the Watch Commander at 758-7250 or provide information anonymously using the crime tip line.
