After nearly 3 months of exhaustive investigation, the Salinas Police Department, in conjunction with the Monterey County District Attorney's Office, have charged Fabian Alvarado (18), of Salinas, with the May 8, 2016 homicide that occurred in the 300 block of Block Ave. Alvarado was already in custody at the Monterey County Jail for a probation violation and is expected to be arraigned on the homicide charge later this week. While Alvarado has been arrested on this case, it is still considered an active and on-going investigation.

Location: 300 blk of Block Ave.
On May 8, 2016, at approximately 10:45 pm, several people called 911 and reported hearing about 20 shots in the area of the 300 blk of Block Ave. At the time, it was unknown if someone had been hit. While officers were enroute to the area, the call was upgraded to a victim of a shooting. When officers arrived they found a 21-year-old male suffering from multiple wounds to his torso. Officers provided CPR until medical personnel arrived and pronounced the victim deceased. The victim was working on a vehicle when an unknown gunman approached and fired several times at the victim. It is unknown if anything was said prior to the shooting. The suspect was described as a HMA wearing a light colored sweatshirt with the hood pulled up. After the shooting, the suspect may have fled in a dark colored mid-sized SUV. It was last seen westbound on Block Ave. toward Kip Dr.
This shooting is being investigated as gang related. This is the 13th homicide in the City of Salinas this year.
