Members of the Monterey County Joint Gang Task Force were driving on Felice St. near E. Market St. when they saw a suspicious vehicle parked along the curb. As they approached the vehicle, the two suspects attempted conceal their activities. When the officers contacted the driver, Gerardo Cerna (23), he appeared very nervous and the passenger, Oscar Resendiz (26) appeared to be tring to condeal something. When Resendiz was instructed to remain still and show his hands, he responded by opening the door in an appartent effort to flee. As he did so, Officers heard a muffled shot and, upon coming around to the passenger side of the vehicle, found Resendiz lying on the ground . Resendiz had accidently shot himself in the lower leg with a revolver he had concealed in his waistband. Resendiz and Cerna were taken into custody. The firearm along with hash oil, marijuana, and prescription medication were recoveredfrom the interior of the car. Resendiz was taken to NMC where he was treated for a through and through wound to the leg and released. Both Resendiz and Cerna were booked into Monterey County Jail for various firearm, drug and probation related offenses.
