On 10-31-14 at approximately 10:00 p.m. Salinas Police Officers responded to 416 N. Madeira Ave regarding a domestic disturbance at the residence. According to the reporting party, a male resident was reported to be assaulting his spouse with a knife and a screwdriver and it was believed that he was going to kill her. According to the reporting parties after being attacked by the Hispanic male, they had to evacuate the premises in fear for their safety and to call for help. It was also reported that the male at the residence had a history of cocaine abuse and the male was currently under the influence.
Officers arrived within minutes after receiving the initial emergency call. When the first Officers arrived on scene they contacted Jaime Garcia (35), who immediately became combative with responding officers. During a struggle with Garcia one officer used his Taser on Garcia who continued to resist and not comply. During the struggle with Officers it became readily apparent that Garcia was going into medical distress. Paramedics, who were staged nearby, were immediately summoned to the scene where Garcia was quickly transported to a local hospital with CPR in progress. Efforts by paramedics to revive Garcia were not successful and he was pronounced deceased at the hospital. A scheduled autopsy should determine exact cause of death.
The five responding Officers who were involved in trying to subdue Garcia were put on routine administrative leave during the initial stages of the investigation. Two officer sustained minor injuries during the struggle.
