A citizen in the area of the pharmacy observed a Hispanic male suspect enter the business wearing a dark hooded jacket with a mask covering his face. The initial citizen was joined by another as the suspect left the business carrying stolen controlled substance. The citizens followed the suspect as he fled westbound on Nissan Road to the rear of the business. An off duty law enforcement officer joined in the pursuit. The suspect fired one round from a small caliber firearm. The citizens and law enforcement officer rushed the suspect and held him on the ground. Another called 911 to request law enforcement. They were joined by a couple more citizens and an off duty federal police officer. Salinas Police Detectives and Officers arrived on scene and took the suspect into custody, recovered the firearm and the stolen controlled substance. The suspect's (Hispanic male, 28 years of age) identity is known but is not being released at this time. Detectives are investigating similar robberies. The citizens and off duty law enforcement did an outstanding job and are to be commended for their actions. The suspect will be booked into the Monterey County Jail.
